Home is Everything: Meet Becky and Maddie
There is a blue home in Bellingham filled with cheerful gnomes, burgeoning bookshelves, and the joyful energy of a teenage girl who returned from the Special Olympics with two silver medals and a bronze.
That girl is Maddie.
And to her, home is everything.
For Maddie's mother, Becky, the journey to homeownership required patience, determination, and hope. She spent five years preparing for the opportunity: taking financial education classes, completing mountains of paperwork, and trusting that one day she would have a permanent place where her family could put down roots.
When she finally received the keys to her Kulshan Community Land Trust home in June 2024, she gained so much more than a house.
She found a neighborhood.
Today, Maddie can walk to school, ride the bus independently, and visit the neighbor's chickens just across the street. Those simple, everyday moments have become symbols of the independence, confidence, and stability every family hopes to experience.
After years of living in an industrial neighborhood, Becky now enjoys being close to grocery stores, parks, and local businesses. Just as importantly, she has neighbors she knows by name and a community where people look out for one another.
Inside, the house has become exactly what Becky dreamed it could be.
"We have an extra bedroom, a big kitchen, and a huge basement. There's room for everyone," she said.
Holiday meals now bring together Maddie's two adult siblings, extended family, and friends around one table. The home has become a gathering place filled with laughter, conversation, and the simple comfort of being together.
For Maddie, remaining in Bellingham meant even more.
Treated for seizures as an infant, she has grown into a vibrant young woman with a contagious enthusiasm for life. Staying in the community she knows has allowed her to continue attending the same school and maintain the relationships with teachers and staff who have supported her every step of the way. Those familiar faces and routines have been invaluable to her continued growth and success.
The stability of home has given Maddie the freedom to thrive, not only in school, but in life. Whether she's proudly displaying her Special Olympics medals, exploring her neighborhood, or simply enjoying the comfort of home, she is surrounded by a community that knows and cares about her.
Looking back on the journey, Becky knows just how much has changed.
"We got lucky," she said. "This house, this neighborhood, this community. It's everything."
For Becky and Maddie, home is more than a roof overhead.
It's belonging.
It's independence.
It's the peace of knowing they'll be able to stay in the community they love.
And it's a reminder that when families have a stable, affordable place to call home, they have the foundation to build extraordinary lives.
