A Generous Legacy

We're not sure what the right word is... Proud? Grateful? Humble? We're holding a little bit of each of those as we share this news with our community.

A Bellingham woman left her home to KulshanCLT after she passed away earlier this year. Her final act of generosity will have a tremendous impact on the community she loved, contributing to a pivotal moment in our work of making homes in Whatcom County affordable for all. This individual was aware that the location and maintenance costs of her home made it impractical for the community land trust model. She therefore intended for us to sell the home and use the proceeds to further our mission. The membership of KulshanCLT voted in line with this, and the house sold for enough to make a large impact in our plans for the coming years.

As we scale our capacity to match the growing housing crisis in Whatcom County, this gift will change our trajectory and propel us into a new season of bringing more affordable homes to our community than ever before. We are aiming to build 35 homes by 2025 and scale our capacity to start building 25 homes per year starting in 2025.

The board and staff of KulshanCLT are so grateful to this amazing woman. This is just the second gift of this kind that KulshanCLT has received in the past five years. I am incredibly honored and humbled by this gift. This generous individual left an incredible legacy of care for our community that will last for generations to come.
