Urban Farming Feeds Community

Myles Kroll shares vegetables in the backyard of his updated energy efficient home

City Sprouts Farm is nearing the end of its second successful season of urban farming a half-acre of our Birchwood Neighborhood property. Their organically-grown produce is sold each Sunday from June through October (9 a.m. – 2 p.m.) at the Birchwood Farmers Market, held in the neighborhood shopping center (formerly Albertson’s Grocery). There they offer a “market match” where EBT (food stamps) are worth double stretching those funds twice as far. The Farm also sold a number of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) shares to Birchwood neighbors on a sliding scale. To support the broader community, for two years in a row, they have grown 1000 pounds of beets and 300 pounds of tomatillos on contract for the Bellingham Food Bank’s “Food Bank Fresh” program.

KulshanCLT will be meeting in the coming months with architect Dan Welch of [bundle] design studio and the City of Bellingham to further pre-development site planning as we consider what type of housing best suits the 3-acre site and the needs of the community.
